EasyApps Enabled

Wrightsites.com is pleased to announce that EasyApps, a software suite featuring 37 web-based applications, is now included in all hosting accounts at the Bronze or higher levels.
EasyApps automates the installation of web-based programs like WordPress, Mambo, Joomla, Coppermine, and more!
To use the EasyApps tool, just click on the EasyApps icon in your H-Sphere Control Panel. Once you turn this feature on, you will see a listing of all 37 applications that can be installed.
Spam Filtering Improvements

As of January 1, 2008, Mr. GoodMail, our superb spam filtering system, is free for all addresses hosted at Wrightsites.com! Beginning December 1, 2007, Wrightsites.com will be turning on Mr. GoodMail for all accounts. This is a manual process, so we estimate that it will take the full month of December before all accounts are active in the system. Clients wishing to opt-out of this free service may do so by submitting a trouble ticket or contacting the Sales Department. A Mr. GoodMail Control Panel will be available on a per-domain basis for $3.00 per month for anyone wishing to see the statistics of the filtering or wanting to self-regulate the protection for addresses within their own domain. VPS System Information

Wrightsites.com has temporarily halted signing up new customers for Virtual Private Servers. Standard shared hosting plans remain unchanged. Nor will this affect any current VPS users. This will allow us time to evaluate a newer version of the VPS software. The new version would clear up a few minor bugs and allow us to offer several additional features. Current VPS users would be transitioned to the newer system once it is up and running.
H-Sphere 3.0

Virtual Private Servers

Wrightsites.com is pleased to announce the arrival of VPS. This system will give webmasters full control over the servers hosting their web applications. Root access is possible by dividing a physical server into many "jails". Each jail then runs its own instance of the operating system, web server, mail server, DNS server, etc. The jails prevent security issues and increase stability by totally isolating each VPS unit from the other units on the same physical server.
Upcoming Services Announcement

Wrightsites.com is pleased to announce a set of new offerings. These will include add-on spam/virus filtering, virtual private servers, dedicated servers, and colocation offerings. These new services will be introduced one at a time beginning in February 2007. We are entering the final testing phase of our new spam/virus blocker. Preliminary testing has shown 100% effectiveness against viruses. In fighting spam, we have found the new system effective at removing up to 98% of spam. This is a totally separate system from the current AntiSpam and AntiVirus tools offered in hosting accounts. Final pricing has not yet been set. Virtual Private Servers (VPS) allows users the freedom and flexibility of a full dedicated server with just a fraction of the cost. VPS technology allows us to divide the physical resources of a server between several users. Each VPS will be able to use a certain percentage of processor and memory and will have ample disk space for most needs. Wrightsites.com VPS units will be based on Linux OS and knowledge of server administration will be required. A graphical VPS management tool will allow automation of many tasks, including the installation of a web server, mail server, DNS server, database server, and more. Colocation services will allow clients to send servers and other equipment to our data center. We will be providing reboots, hands and eyes, administration, as well as basic IP addressing and bandwidth connectivity.
MS FrontPage Support on Linux Systems

Microsoft announced earlier in the year that they would be discontinuing Frontpage and its associated programs. While your Frontpage software will continue to function on your computer, Frontpage Extensions, one of the discontinued programs called will not. Frontpage Extensions is the software that runs on our Linux servers to allow the Windows-based Frontpage software on your computer to publish to the server. Without it, you will not be able to use Frontpage to publish your website and any forms and themes will cease to function. Wrightsites.com, through our affiliation with Positive Software, Inc., has pressured Microsoft to continue support for Frontpage Extensions, but they refuse to budge. Their last update was published over a year ago and there are now growing security concerns with the current version. Microsoft has announced that they have no intension of releasing security patches to correct these possible issues. Because of Microsoft’s decision to discontinue support of Frontpage Extensions, Wrightsites.com has no choice but to discontinue support for MS Frontpage on our Linux-based hosting accounts. Effective January 1, 2007, Frontpage Extensions will be removed from all future H-Sphere updates. In other words, the first time we update our software after the New Year, any Frontpage forms or themes will stop working and you will be unable to publish changes to your website. We regret the inconvenience that this will inevitably cause you. Microsoft is replacing Frontpage with two separate programs called SharePoint Designer and Expression Web. Neither program has been officially released yet and Microsoft has not set final specifications. SharePoint Designer will rely on the SharePoint technology that MS is pushing now. Because SharePoint requires two separate physical servers and thousands of dollars in software licenses, we have no plans to implement this during 2007. Expression Web appears to push users toward ASP, another technology that has almost no support outside of the Windows community. We do support ASP on our Windows hosting plans, however MS has not yet released final requirements, so we cannot guarantee compatibility with this software either. There are two options available to you now. First, you can begin using different web design software. Unfortunately, this may also require you to purchase a license for the software you choose. Second, we can move your account to a Windows server. Microsoft is not going to discontinue support for MS Frontpage on Windows servers until at least 2008. However, this will require a slightly higher hosting fee.
New Windows 2003 Servers

We have set up new Windows 2003 servers in a new data center in Dallas, Texas. All Windows-based hosting accounts will be moved to this data center in the next two weeks. This became necessary because our previous data center provider in San Antonio was bought out and our servers were moved onto their less-than-stellar networks. This caused massive latency issues for Windows accounts using the MySQL database, which is housed in our Edmonton data center. There will be zero downtime for all of the accounts that will be moved. This is an automated task, handled by our H-Sphere Control Panel System. Clients will receive an email once their account has been moved to the new servers.
Software Upgrade

The H-Sphere Control Panel software has been upgraded to version 2.5. This was a major upgrade and it may cause some issues for some clients. If you are experiencing trouble with your account, please let us know by submitting a trouble ticket. This upgrade will allow us to offer a much wider range of hosting options in the near future. Pricing Changes

As we are all aware, costs are going up everywhere we look. Fuel for our cars and homes, electricity, the food that we eat, health care - costs are going up everywhere. Web hosting companies are not immune to these increases. Wherever possible, Wrightsites.com has cut costs while maintaining our high service goals and affordable prices. Looking at our client list and seeing that we still have our first clients from when we started in 1999, I think we’ve maintained a level of service that is rarely found in the hosting industry. Our average client has been with us for over three years – an amazing length of time that few other hosting companies can claim. Unfortunately, further cuts are not possible without causing noticeable differences in service levels. Rather than cut these services, we are opting to increase prices for our hosting plans. It has been five years since our last price increase. Beginning June 1, 2006, we are increasing prices on all hosting plans. To help offset this additional cost to you, we are increasing your disk space allowances. The website has already been updated with the new prices and disk space allowances. New Website Features

Two new website features were added today. First, we have secured with SSL technology all of the order forms for supplementary services, such as website maintenance or SSL certificates. While hosting order forms have always been secure, these remaining order forms do not collect billing information and so they were never made secure before. This step was taken in an increased effort to protect our clients. Second, we have added a Live Help system to our website. There is a link in the right column, below our featured plans that allows access to this new system. Live Help will allow us to communicate more efficiently with our website visitors by allowing instant question/answer sessions. The system will even allow us to push website users to pages pertinent to their questions. We anticipate both of these new features having benefits for all current and future clients.

We are happy to provide to all of our clients over 60 new visual tutorials. Site Studio users will benefit from 7 tutorials covering topics such as password protecting pages and creating a product page within Site Studio. Hosting clients are shown in detail how to perform actions such as adding AntiSpam to your email accounts and managing MySQL databases. And Hosting Resellers will learn how to create billing periods, manage accounts, and setting up a merchant gateway. We took the support requests we receive most often and had detailed, visual demonstrations created to show you the best way to do these things.
